Why you should not just skip your methodology
The methodology is the foundation of your research. It describes how you carry out your research, and that is exactly what assessors want to see. Yet many students underestimate this part or write it only at the last moment.
Common mistakes in the methodology
1. No clear link with the research question
Many students name methods without showing how those methods fit their research question.
2. Lack of detail
Describe your research technique, target group, data collection and analysis clearly. Vague terms like “I held interviews” are not enough.
3. Not justifying choices
Why did you choose a survey and not interviews? Why this target group? Explain it.
Tips to make this part strong
- Write as if your reader should be able to repeat the research without any questions.
- Use headings: Research design, Data collection, Data analysis, etc.
- Refer to appendices with questionnaires or interview guides where relevant.
Final reminder
A good methodology shows that your research is solidly put together. Give yourself the time to work out this part well.
